"Thank you so much for your reply! Everything you told me worked like a charm. To be honest...I didn't even expect a reply. I've emailed companies so many times and as far as I can recall...this is the very first time someone ever even bothered to reply at all. You not only replied...but you replied promptly—and—actually solved my problems!"

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I share my files with PDFpen on my Mac?

The best way is to use iCloud; you can turn on iCloud storage from PDFpen on your iPad in Settings. Once turned on your files are automatically saved to iCloud.

On your Mac, to access iCloud you will need PDFpen or PDFpenPro 6.0 or later on purchased from the Mac App Store. Apple restricts iCloud access to applications purchased through the Mac App Store. (If you purchased PDFpen or PDFpenPro directly from Smile, you can use Dropbox to share your PDFs between your Mac and iPad.)

In PDFpen on your Mac, choose File->Open from iCloud to work with the those documents stored on iCloud. Changes saved to documents in iCloud are automatically shared between your Mac and iOS devices.

Why does a gray arrow appear in the corner of my PDF document's icon?

This indicates changes to your PDF are being saved to iCloud. You may also see a progress bar at the bottom of the icon, indicating the progress of an update.

How do I join multiple PDF documents?

1) Enter "My Documents" view.
2) Tap "Edit" in the upper right.
3) Tap the PDFs you wish to combine.
4) Tap "+" in the upper left.
5) Tap "Join [number] Documents." (If desired, change the order that the PDFs will appear in the new combined PDF.)
6) Tap "Done" to finish.

How do I split PDF documents?

To split a document, you first need to duplicate it, and then remove the desired pages from the original and the duplicate.

1) Enter "My Documents" view.
2) Tap "Edit" in the upper right.
3) Tap the PDF you wish to split.
4) Tap "+" in the upper left.
5) Tap "Duplicate Documents."
6) Tap "Done".
7) Tap on the PDF you just duplicated to open it.
8) Tap on the Thumbnail View icon.
9) Tap "Edit" and then tap on the pages you wish to delete. Tap the trash can icon to delete.
10) Tap "Done" and then tap on a page in the PDF to exit Thumbnail View.

Return to the "My Documents" view, and repeat steps 7-10 to remove pages from the duplicate.

iOS 6 Only

Why does "Open In" not show PDFpen?

Open In appears to have a limit to the list: 10 items in iOS 5, and 25 in iOS 6. Once it's full new applications will not show. The solution is to delete applications you don't use "Open In" with from the iPad, and then others you can use will appear on the list. Once that is done you can reinstall applications you have deleted as the list seems to be in application installation order

I have iOS 6, how can I download a version that's compatible?

The App Store allows developers to offer a compatible, earlier version of an app for earlier iOS version users based on Apple's support article here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5919

Download an older app version:

  1. Open the App Store on your device running iOS 4.3.3 or later.
  2. Go to the Purchased screen. For iPhone the Purchase screen is in the Updates tab.
  3. Select the app you want to download.
  4. If a compatible version of the app is available for your version of iOS simply confirm that you want to download it. For example, after purchasing iPhoto for your iOS 7 device, you can install an earlier compatible version of iPhoto from your iOS 6 device.
